ATTENDANCE
Public service is the mission of the Attendance & Registration Office. A director and two secretaries provide many services necessary to the smooth operation of our school department. All new students (or re-entries) entering East Providence schools must register at the Registration Center on Burnside Avenue. Registration procedures are outlined on this site. Good communication between schools and community is a major goal of this department.

STUDENT REGISTRATION

All students registering for school in East Providence must register at the Registration Center at the Administration Building on Burnside Avenue. A child can only be registered for school by a parent or legal guardian. Any person acting in place of the parent must have legal verification of guardianship status. A Director and two secretaries staff the Registration Center. All persons are received in a ‘family friendly’ atmosphere and the registration process itself only takes several minutes.

There are required documents at the time of registration, as listed below:

Prior school transcripts (report card, etc.).
Medical records showing required immunizations.
Proof of East Providence residency. Utility bill, formal lease agreement, phone bill, other legal document accepted by the Director.
Birth Certificate.

Students entering grades pre-K through 6 may start school immediately, in most cases. Grades 7 through 12 students may need at least one full day to meet with school secondary guidance staff for schedule selection and assignments.

Should a parent/guardian not have the required documents at the time of registration, the process will be on hold until the prior school forwards such documents to the Registration Center. Records can be faxed to facilitate this step.

All records are handled in a confidential manner in compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

OUT OF NEIGHBORHOOD REQUESTS

Parents seeking to enroll a child in a school other than their neighborhood school may submit a request to do so. An Out-of-Neighborhood request form must be completed and submitted to the Attendance office. Permission may be granted as long as space is available. New requests must be submitted each school year. There is NO transportation provided for approved Out-of-Neighborhood placements.

MINOR WORK PERMITS

Working Papers for minors, ages 14 through 17 are issued at the Attendance and Registration Office. A student can pick up the ‘Intention to Employ’ form at this office. The form must be completed by the “EMPLOYER” and signed by a parent. The student must bring the completed form, ‘in person’, to the Attendance Office. These are required regulations by the Labor Department according to state and federal laws. Minor students cannot work without a permit. Employers who hire students in violation of labor laws are subject to a fine.

COMMUNITY & PUBLIC RELATIONS

The Attendance Office initiates an effort to provide a communications link between schools and the community at large. Press releases, telephone hotlines, video productions and print publications are some of the ways in which public relations is maintained. Annual school system calendars, code of conduct booklets, etc., are produced and distributed by this office. School sports and musical productions are videotaped for broadcast on cable television. Members of the community are invited to contact this office with ideas or requests for public relation coverage.

SCHOOL TRUANCY COURT

Starting in November of 2002 the Rhode Island Family Court will maintain a ”TRUANCY COURT” within East Providence. The Court will operate from the Martin Middle School on one day every week. Students who are habitually truant from any school in East Providence will be referred to the TRUANCY COURT for counseling and other remedial actions.
