East Providence RTI Team defines strategies to support student achievement

The East Providence School District is committed to provide a quality education to every student, every day.  However, not all students learn in the same way or at the same rate.  Response to Intervention(RtI) is the mechanism to provide support and interventions so that every child will meet his or her full potential.  This initiative is everyone’s responsibility: the classroom teacher, special educator, ELL teacher, Reading Specialist, social worker, psychologist, LEA, Speech and Language specialists, guidance counselor, principal and the family.

RTI or Response to Intervention is a tiered process of instruction that allows schools to identify struggling students early and provide appropriate instructional interventions.  Early intervention means more chances for success and less need for special education services.   Dr. Caroline Caswell, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development is leading a new initiative to integrate RTI strategies effectively across the district.  A team of educators from all areas of the district met this summer to assess the district’s current intervention strategies in math and literacy.  During the summer RtI workshops, all literacy and programs were discussed and categorized according to the RtI model.   Our team outlined each research-based intervention strategies and placed each program in the RtI model accordingly.

Throughout the school year, elementary teachers will receive further professional development from RIDE Technical Assistance on how to implement the research-based interventions within their classroom.  A team will be created to review student data resulting from the interventions, and decisions will be made whether to continue the intervention, change the intervention or move the student to an intensive intervention.  With the new school-based team leadership, a collaborative approach will provide struggling students with the support they need.

Parents will be notified if their student has been identified for targeted intervention and support.
