Essentials of Music
- Whether
you're a casual listener or a serious music
student, here's the site for basic information
about classical music.
ClassicalWorks.com
- This site is devoted to the love and knowledge
of classical music. Look around, you will find
extensive history pages, bios, links, resources
and more.
MusicTheory.net
- this site helps you learn almost
everything there is to know about reading music!
http://www.teoria.com/
- Teoria serves as both Computer Aided
Instruction (CAI), and "drill and practice." In
the "Tutorials" section, the site explains a
variety of music theory concepts in a sequential
approach. Embedded within the tutorials are
graphic and aural representations of the topics
covered. In addition, the site contains a
glossary of musical terms, and selected music
theory articles. In the "Exercises" section,
students can apply the concepts covered in the
tutorials. Students can also work on ear
training via rhythmic and melodic dictation.
Students can also download the entire site
(membership required) so that an internet
connection is not always required to access the
material.
http://www.smu.edu/totw/
- Much like Teoria, Theory on the Web is a CAI
website designed to present music theory in a
sequential approach. This site also contains a
glossary of terms, and suggested activities for
the students. In addition, visual and aural
examples are included for each topic covered.
Topics range in difficulty from an introduction
to the fundamentals of music through chromatic
harmonies and modulations. This site will prove
to be an invaluable resource to help accentuate
what I am teaching my students in my music
theory class. It also has the possibility of
serving as an advance organizer (Ausubel).
Students can be assigned a specific unit to
discover on their own (Bruner), and return to
the class ready to learn the new material (Law
of readiness/Thorndike).
Naxos Classicals
- This site includes a
glossary of music terms, composer bios, an intro
to classical music and another to opera, a
