The East Providence High School community believes that excellence in education is the pathway to the future. Our goal is to instill a passion for learning and a sense of responsibility in all students. Teachers working with families ensure that every student’s transition to society is personal and meaningful. Students, administrators, faculty, and staff are part of a culture promoting a safe environment to explore new ideas, meet new challenges, respect diversity and contribute to the community.
 

 

Smoke-Free Policy
The East Providence High School Administration recognizes the health problems associated with smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco. The administration recognizes that according to rules and regulations of the Workplace Safety Law, smoking is prohibited in all public places. In accordance with RI General Law, Section 2.0-General Requirements, (q) “schools, including primary, secondary, and post secondary education facilities; the administration also recognizes that tobacco smoke poses a health risk to non-smokers. To this end, the Administration desires to maintain a tobacco-free environment; therefore, effective September 1, 2005, the use of tobacco in any form is prohibited in school buildings, in school vehicles and on school grounds by all persons.

POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

School administrators shall develop a consistent means of communicating the policy and procedures to staff, students, parents and new employees.

1) The staff, parents and community will be informed about this policy and its benefits in advance of implementation.

2) Non-school groups that use the school facilities will be given a copy of the school policy upon making a request for use of the facilities.

3) “No Smoking Signs” in accordance with RI Department of Health will be posted in all buildings on school grounds. Applicants, new employees and students shall be informed of this policy.

Any student found to be in non-compliance with this policy would be subject to the following:

SECONDARY SCHOOLS

FIRST OFFENSE: Students’ parents will be notified and the student will be reprimanded with three (3) night’s detention. Students will be provided information on the health effects associated with tobacco use.

SECOND OFFENSE: Suspension issued, 3-Days; or Enrollment in 4-night Cessation Program. Students' parents will be notified. (In lieu of suspension, community service options may be provided by building administrators).

THIRD OFFENSE: Suspension issued, 5 Days, or enrollment in a cessation program. Students' parents will be notified. (In lieu of suspension, community service options may be provided by building administrators).

SUBSEQUENT OFFENSES: Parent conference and increased suspensions.

Section III. N. Smoke-Free Policy


ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

FIRST OFFENSE: Parent conference with school administrators. Penalties administered at the discretion of the school administrator.

SECOND OFFENSE: Parent conference and two day detention; provide information on smoking cessation and tobacco use prevention. Penalties administered at the discretion of school administrator.

EMPLOYEES
Employees found to be in non-compliance with this policy shall be subject to progressive disciplinary sanctions as outlined in their collective bargaining agreement.
