World Languages Department Course Offerings

A consecutive three-year program of study of the same World Language is recommended for graduation.  A four or five year sequence is suggested for those students interested in applying to the more competitive universities and colleges.  Latin is highly recommended as an elective upon completion of or in addition to the recommended course of study.

CURRICULUM

The World Languages Curriculum is aligned with the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. There are five “C’s” that are incorporated in this curriculum, namely Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. All Modern Languages (French, Portuguese and Spanish) follow the same curriculum and national standards. It is our belief that language and communication are an integral part of the human experience. Language acquisition will enhance the students’ ability to understand and be understood in a global society.

All World Language courses are offered as college preparatory programs (CP or Honors).

Early Enrollment Programs through Rhode Island College may be an option for students in French IV and V, Portuguese IV and V and Spanish IV and V at the student's expense.

FRENCH, PORTUGUESE, AND SPANISH

LEVEL I
COLLEGE PREPARATORY

This introductory course initiates the study of a World Language through a variety of activities that interrelate the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students will have ample practice in listening comprehension and speaking activities to enable them to communicate basic needs and information.  Authentic materials, including videos and cultural readings, will be used to reinforce the five “C’s

LEVEL II
HONORS

This is a faster paced program challenging very motivated students.  Computer projects or computer research may be assigned to enhance cultural awareness.  Reinforcement of the 5 “C’s will continue.

LEVEL II
COLLEGE PREPARATORY

Level I materials will be reviewed and reinforced.  The continuation of the four learning skills will be further developed.  More advanced grammar will be introduced to enable students to communicate through time using the appropriate tense and vocabulary.  Reinforcement of the 5 “C’s will continue.

LEVEL III
HONORS

Level I and II materials will be reviewed and reinforced with greater emphasis on speaking and writing.  Grammar will become more complex.   Students will also study history and be introduced to literature in their respective language.  Reinforcement of the 5 “C’s will continue.

LEVEL III
COLLEGE PREPARATORY

Level I and II materials will be reviewed and reinforced with greater emphasis on speaking and writing. Continued advanced grammar is introduced. A brief introduction to history and literature will be given.  Reinforcement of the 5 “C’s will continue.

LEVEL IV
HONORS

Level I, II and III materials will be reviewed and reinforced with a much greater emphasis on speaking and writing. The finer points of grammar and reinforcement of the subjunctive will be emphasized.  A variety of projects may be required using computers.  Literature, art and reference to history may be used to reinforce the 5 “C’s.

LEVEL V
HONORS

In addition to the continuing policy of reinforcement of grammar review, level V attempts to further explore, in greater depth than ever before, the respective French-, Portuguese- or Spanish- speaking world around us.  Students will have the opportunity to read some classic novels, poetry, plays and/or short stories.  History will be reviewed as it applies to the literature being read.  Communication skills are emphasized. Reinforcement of the 5 “C’s will continue.

CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

LATIN I
HONORS

Fundamentals of classical Latin, including declensions of nouns and adjectives, conjugations of verbs, elementary grammatical principles, and basic vocabulary are the essentials of this course. Derivation of English and Romance languages and words is stressed from the outset, with an eye to increasing the student’s working English and modern language vocabularies. Special attention will be given to identifying and learning words the roots of which provide the foundation of English vocabulary. Fundamentals of English grammar are constantly reviewed as an absolute essential to the study of Latin. Particularly is this constant review done since more than half of English rules of grammar and syntax is derived from Latin. Students will complete elementary reading and writing exercises. Only serious hardworking students with superior motivation and self-discipline should select this course. Homework will be assigned every night.

LATIN II
HONORS

In the first semester, this course provides a short, intensive review of Latin I.  Emphasis is placed upon further expanding each student’s Latin and English vocabularies and developing his/her abilities to read, translate, and understand Latin of intermediate difficulty.  Near the end of the year, reading in Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic Wars may commence insofar as time allows.  Only the same type of students described in Latin I should select this course.  Homework will be assigned every night.
